THROWING THIS ONE OPEN

I can never make my mind up. Is google earth just another thing trying to acclimatise us to the surveillance society or is it a fantastic tool to play around with? Or both?

Download it and play around if you don't know what I am talking about.

As a techno-geek, I must conclude that Google Earth is a nifty toy with potential as a useful tool. A tool which could certainly be abused in proportion to its power.

David Brin has some interesting ideas about the Surveillance Society, some of them non-obvious. Here's a sample.

I think its great for playing with and is a good educational tool. You can bet your boots though that the powers that be will have a live version on their PCs.

Hey, what's the deal with Iraq being so obviously patchy? It looks as though complete slabs have been...uh...pasted over.

Also, last time I checked, when you type in Dili, East Timor, there are massive fires there with smoke trailing toward the southwest. What's up with that?

My eldest son is totally hooked on this thing. I tried to do my friend's home in Scotland and the information is just not there to support a close-up. She however, can do mine in the U.S. and it's crystal clear.

Both. But it's defintely crumbs from the military-industrial table, as indeed is the whole internet.

I wonder what they can actually do with it?

  • Imperial Measures

  • Wish You Were Here
  • Wish You Were Here is a 6 minute film about the unprecendted rate of animal extinction we are currently experiencing

  • Gorillas and us
  • I don't like creationism, neither did Douglas Adams

    Arse of the month

The inaugural 'Arse of the month' award goes to our very own Scottish First Minister Jack (Joke) McConnell. He seems to spend a lot of his time sucking up to english politicians and yet it appears they don't even know his name. Follow the link to see..
