WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
These are the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Well, the first 2 are. The third one is what Scottish & Southern Energy's are planning to do to them by putting a series of exceptionally large pylons right through these mountains. They claim that this is necessary in order to meet the Governments Green energy requirements (the power going down the lines will be from a wind farm). I am all for Wind farms but the issue here is why can't they put the power lines underground and not ruin Scotland? Burying power lines is already standard practice in countries such as Germany, Canada, Norway and Belgium - so why not here? Because it is more expensive.

It's not just to do with the scenery, there are health risks associated with pylons too.

Even if you are not Scottish PLEASE go to Cairngorms Revolt Against Pylons and lend your support any way you see fit. Whether it's a donation or an email, any help is appreciated.

If you are Scottish, please do as much as you can.

I don't know. I can see the environmental argument - but without thbis connector there is NO chance of sustainable energy in Scotland.

    None.

1820, i spoke to an engineering professor about this and he says it is about twice as expensive to put the lines undergrounf initially but that in the long run it is chepaer because maintenance is so much easier and less dangerous

Depending upon the voltage going over the lines, it may not be possible to put them underground. Underground lines work for relatively low voltage lines such as normal municipal drop lines. But for long haul, they have to hike the voltage *way* up there to have reasonable lossage over the length of the line. At normal 25kv municipal voltage levels, underground lines work quite well. But if you hike it up to 735 kV, a typical voltage for a long distance line, the losses in an underground line become prohibitive.

So until true "warm" superconductors become feasible for long distance power transmission, we're stuck with those butt-ugly pylons. Alas.

The inaugural 'Arse of the month' award goes to our very own Scottish First Minister Jack (Joke) McConnell. He seems to spend a lot of his time sucking up to english politicians and yet it appears they don't even know his name. Follow the link to see..
