Part of the problem appears to be offsite pictures. If I'm not mistaken, blogger has to connect to distant sites and download all those pictures for every blogger profile. I have removed my picture to 1 not have to see my own ugly mug staring back at me every time I post a comment and 2 to help aleviate the problem.
Suggested action: make sure your picture is actually thumbnail size before using it in your profile.
Disclamer: I'm just making this up as I go along, and I'm a little drunk (having just finished work for the weekIdon'thaveaproblem.)
