CLARIFICATION |
I just want to clarify why I posted what I did yesterday. There is a fuller explanation at the end of the comments but in brief...
I am not asking anyone to admire the people who went and fought. That is their own choice, and on the whole I wouldn't admire them. I am not at all into glorifying the military.
It is merely what was said on 1820 before the list....namely...
"Okay - maybe you don't want soldiers in office but the point of hypocrisy is valid enough, and OFTEN those who have been in war are the least likely to start them"
i know - only OFTEN - not always.
ALSO, I don't buy the republican/democrat or tory/labour thing either. I just think it made interesting reading. I have changed the front page cartoon accordingly
ALSO ALSO - I have made a bit of a change to my cost of war counter (just on the right). It has been bugging me for a while so I changed to something a bit more accurate. If anyone else feels the need to do something similar it is very easy. |

We ought to compile a list of cultural and political figures who refused to fight or were outspoken in support of the issue.
Bravo for the cost of war update. I will do something similar soon...

fair point.
wasn't their talk over at mickeys RE: a war-resistors day or something?

Honestly, I don't think military service should be required, but at the same time, those that did not serve should have it pointed out that they are committing men to an experience they did not share.
Maybe better said, they ones who sought deferrments or other means of avoiding service should have this pointed out if they advocate deployments. They should be required to state why they stayed out of the last one, and what is so different in the current case that they would have served in this one.
This forces them to both address their own credibility on the issue, and the current one.
You can't just ban people who didn't serve, because certainly Gandhi would've avoided the draft, or Jesus, or whoever, and I don't think you would want to rule them out.
Rambling.
Mike

Arse of the month |
The inaugural 'Arse of the month' award goes to our very own Scottish First Minister Jack (Joke) McConnell. He seems to spend a lot of his time sucking up to english politicians and yet it appears they don't even know his name. Follow the link to see..
