| GUNS DON'T KILL PEOPLE...
Well, I'm afraid that they do. Their sole purpose is to cause maximum damage in the most efficient way possible. Everyone knows and admits this. Except gun enthusiasts and firearm manufacturers.
As Eddie Izzard said:
"Guns don't kill people, people kill people, and monkeys do too (if they have a gun)".
Hence the picture at the top. Give him a banana or there's a good chance your head will have some new ventilation. In fact the ape [UPDATE: thanks to guerrillasinthemidst for pointing out that chimps aren't monkeys but I can't find a picture of a monkey with a gun so that'll have to do!] probably has more intelligence than your average gun club member, so apologies to all our chimp readers out there. You're probably not as trigger-happy as your homo-sapien cousins.
There is a serious point in that line from Izzard: guns = death.
10 years ago 16 school-children and their teacher were brutally murdered by a deranged man in the town of Dunblane, Scotland. He did this with an arsenal of powerful licensed handguns.
He obviously wanted to cause great harm. But did it have to be so easy for him? Why should civilians have access to such weaponry? Thankfully, even with strong opposition from the gun lobby the 1997 National Firearms (Amendment) Act banned handguns and made provision for a national firearms database to be set up. Still no sign of that database, sadly.
There's a saying - "When You Have a Hammer, Everything Looks like a Nail". Well, when you have a gun everything starts to look like a target. So it makes sense to limit access to guns and keep a very close eye on those who do. And that goes for "harmless" air-guns too. They can also inflict horrific injuries as can be seen by this boy's death and these other reports.

good post paul but there is an international element to this that some people may not get (but i know that u are fully aware of). most places have guns as a matter a matter of routine. in the uk we don't...yet. that is one of the best hings about here.
i went to canada and i spoke to a guy who point blank refused to believe me that not even the cops are allowed to carry guns here. he utterly refused to believe it.
so for international readers... yeah it can happen. here is only one place. norway and iceland are two others
yeah, i think we are lucky in a lot of respects. perhaps it took the atrocity in dunblane to shake people and the authorities up. thank fuck they actually banned the sale/licensing of handguns (which wasn't exactly widespread anyway, to be perfectly honest).
also, i think it's a little worrying that our police now have tasers and there are calls for more to be armed. so we can't get complacent.
and then there's the growth in illegal gun use and the still shockingly high levels of knife crime here too.
but i'd rather take my chances with some ned with a knife than with a gun!
got to go to bed but from expeience iwould rather walk alone thru brixton than ruchill.
The idea of a gunless society is just way beyond the imagination of most Americans. I don't know what it is, perhaps a love of long dangly tools or something. It would be lovely to be in a gunless society. But with a V.P. who loves to shoot defensless birds, well - fat chance.
Wait a second...monkeys kill people?!?
This will not stand. I shall immediately send off a strongly-worded letter to my Congressman demanding that monkeys take gun safety courses before being issued a concealed weapon permit!
Egads, what a bunch of reactionaries. Such is being bipedal methinks.
First, chimps, gorillas, and the other so-called "higher" primates are NOT monkeys. Monkeys have tails. Egads, no wonder we (like your prisoners) toss our fecal matter at you when you pass us by in the boxes you call "zoos".
Secondly, we in the Anthropoidea suborder who are NOT of the binomial nomenclature "Homo Sapiens" do NOT want to be affiliated with your types for the obvious reasons.
Thirdly, chimps don't need guns. In fact, not too long ago a chimp bit the testicles off of one gentlemen. You see, we non-human primates not only not kill you, but we simply prevent you from further destroying us.
Fourthly, guns don't kill people, bullets do.
Fiftly, (starting to sound like Bernard Longergan here) chimps are right nasty bastards. Bonobos, on the other hand, are quite hospitable. Chimps hunt and kill colobus monkeys (yes, the little wee ones with the tails) wheras bonobos engage in sex (even homosexual sex) in order to mitigate hostilites.
So, the next time you folks have a go at your "cousins" (gag), just remember that we have a better understanding of your own anomalous anatomy than your very own "brothers" the anti-woman/anti-body/anti-joy Christians!
I remember looking at the stats of gun deaths in the US and Canada and the UK and it is crazy. the US had like 30,000. Canada 800 and the UK like less than 20.
"monkeys kill people" Well we certainly have evidence of chimps (GWB) killing people - SCARY!
you of course know there is a town (somewhere down south, georgia florida....they all blend [yes, i'm sorry mr danger]) in america where it's against the law NOT to have a gun (and i just read another town is thinking of passing the same law
how OBSCENE is that?
i had heard that rose. also, bush passed a law when governor of texas making it legal to carry a concelaed weapon
Monkeys are dangerous with guns
This will be unpopular here, but I gotta mention it: knowing what I know now, I probably would have opposed "gun control" in Poland during WWII, as I would have to oppose it in Iraq today.
No one finds the manufacture, sale, and use of guns more repulsive and morally reprehensible than I do. I've never owned a gun and I never will, and outside of a manditory 5-week riflery unit of high school physical education, I've never held one. But the ascendency of the proto-fascist government in the US causes me to question at what point in the American march toward full-on police state that I would want to be able to purchase a gun. Probably never...I'm just thinking out loud and playing devil's advocate for y'all.
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- Thomas Jefferson
jason - that tyranny that you mention.. do you not think it is sort of what you got at the moment?
also, why are you qouting a document written by 50 or so rich white men as if it is a religious tome?
Guerrillas, shame on me for my error. In my defence, when I was writing the post I had a feeling that chimps weren't monkeys but couldn't be bothered to check. Updating now.
Keir, I see what you're saying - but naively I believe that governments can be toppled using non-violent methods. In totalitarian states this may prove difficult but I can't agree with every person in every country having firearms just in case. Surely citizens need to take action before a country descends into such an entity?
"Surely citizens need to take action before a country descends into such an entity?" Of course they should (and don't call me Shirley). But will they? Do they? Are they? I guess a good question might be how far you think a given country has descended. If we're discussing the UK or the US, I think pretty far.
I just voted last week in state and local elections. In addition, President Bush will not be president after 2008 -- that race is wide open as it stands right now. Your wild histrionics about tyranny have no basis in the physical universe we inhabit.
Jefferson and company were men of the Enlightenment par excellence. Never before in human history had there been a government founded from scratch on the basis of Reason, formulated by the concentrated brainpower of such a large assembly of neoclassical intellectuals. They have more claim to our allegiance than, let us say, the followers of Marx and the Counter-Enlightement, who always end up making the lives of millions nasty, brutish, and short.
